Diamond Care
Cleaning Your Diamond Jewelry
You can soak your diamond engagement and wedding rings in dishwashing liquid and water for up to 30 minutes to clean your diamond engagement and wedding rings. However, this method is best suited for prong and cathedral settings, as soaking rings with paving and basket settings can increase the likelihood of gems coming loose. Always use mild dish soap in warm water and soak your jewelry for a few minutes. Gently scrub the metal with a soft cloth or cotton swab, rinse, and repeat the process if necessary. Be cautious when soaking jewelry and proceed carefully.
For an extra shine, you can soak diamonds in window cleaner, but do not soak for more than a minute, and do not use this process with rhodium. Rinse the ring with warm water and dry it thoroughly after dipping it into the solution. Use toothpicks to remove dirt between the prongs and diamonds and tweezers to remove any fibres from the cloth that get stuck in the setting. Be careful not to scratch the metal or move the positioning of a prong.
Most diamond jewelry can be cleaned using ionic cleaners. However, be cautious if your engagement ring has stones other than diamonds, as some gemstones can be adversely affected by the electrical current in the ionic cleaning process. When storing your diamond jewelry, keep it separate from other jewelry to prevent scratches. Be mindful that diamonds can scratch not only other jewelry but also each other, so avoid storing two diamond pieces in a way that they touch each other.
Insuring Your Diamond Jewelry
If you have purchased beautiful diamond jewelry, it's crucial to insure it properly in case of theft or loss. While homeowner's and renter's policies may cover some loss, more is needed than the original cost of a diamond engagement or wedding ring. Identifying how much coverage your current policies provide and considering additional insurance options is essential.
If you decide to purchase additional insurance, find out about the deductible and cost. Most insurance companies require an appraisal before insuring fine jewelry, so ensure you know which appraisal reports your insurance company accepts. Verify if the policy covers you entirely, even if the item is damaged or lost overseas. Some policies may require riders to provide adequate coverage, so read the policy details before paying for extra insurance. Check if the jewelry is insured at a total replacement cost and if you can receive a cash settlement instead of a replacement item.
Keep in mind that your insurance company may require updated appraisals periodically. Expect to have your jewelry appraised every few years and learn the specific rules of your chosen insurance company. Additionally, inquire about discounts for home security systems, such as an alarm system.
When you invest in diamond jewelry, ensure your investment is protected. Research insurance companies online or through calls for information to make comparisons before selecting one.
